Vital Files You Need

It's become brutally apparent to me that there are some flaws in the Mac OS. Some of these are glaring and some are subtle. But I see them everyday as a consultant. So I thought I'd put them all together on a page so everyone could get them.

Here's my list

  • Flip4Mac - to view non-Apple video
  • StuffIt Expander - to expand most compressed files
  • Onyx - to clean up your computer
  • Perian - to help with video files
  • Firefox - as an alternative to Safari
  • RealPlayer - for video
  • VLC - for video too
  • GraphicConverter - to convert any graphic into another
  • Adium - to IM with almost ANY protocol
  • CyberDuck - to transfer files

Flip4Mac is a great product that immediately gives you access to most video files. It's free and it really works.

StuffIt is the best program for opening most compressed files.

Onyx, is simply the best program for cleaning up your Mac. Just use the Automation button on the toolbar and you'll clean up your computer and get back space. And it's free!

Perian is a QuickTime plug-in that helps with video files.

Firefox is the best alternative web browser out there. Whenever Safari fails me, Firefox works.

RealPlayer is a must-have video player.

VLC is another stand-alone video player that you can now control from an iPhone. It is also vital for Handbrake users.

GraphicConverter is a Swiss-Army knife tool for anyone who needs to work with graphics and has to save them in diverse formats.

Adium is an 'all-in-one' Instant Messenger program. You name the program, it probably works with it.

CyberDuck is a super simple FTP program so if you have to transfer files from one computer to another, it's the one to use.

I've linked all these to Download.Com. If you don't know it, you should add it to you list of bookmarks. It's the single greatest clearinghouse of every piece of software for Mac, PC, Palm and iPhone on the net today. You can also go to MacUpToDate.com which is almost as good and they have a desktop tool that will keep your software up-to-date, too.

Let me know what you think.
