How to Zoom and Crop Video
The goal of this lesson is to show how to use the Crop and Ken Burns features of iMovie. With these, you can move in on a subject or simply change the focus of the clip. This will not make the image better or clearer. So remember that you are limited to the resolution of the original image.
In iMovie, setup a clip you want to work with.
At the top of the image, you will see 7 new buttons.
1. Fit button: This will make the image fit the dimensions of the view (16:9). Portrait images will have black pillars to either side.
2. Crop Button: This will create a proportional frame that will allow you to zoom in on an area of choice.
3. Ken Burns Button: This will put up 2 proportional frames (Green for start position, Red for end position).(Note: Will ONLY work with still images)
4. Rotate Left:
5. Rotate Right:
6. Play Button: This button allows you to preview the action before setting it as final
7. Done Button: This finalizes the changes.
Above is the proportional frame that the Crop Button creates. Notice the 'L' shaped brackets on each corner. These are the handles that you'll use to resize the frame. (Note: this frame can not be rotated or shrunken smaller than the proportions of the original image.)
By grabbing one of the corners and dragging it inward, you can change the size. By grabbing opposite corners, you can shrink the frame to the size you want.
To check that the clip will look as you'd like, click the Play Clip button first. This will play just the clip you've been working on and show you what effect the changes you've done to it will have.
When you're satisfied with the results, you can then click the Done button. This will drop you out of Edit mode and back to reviewing the clip.
